Back in July, just as I was getting into songwriting, my girlfriend decided that she’d like to write me some lyrics. I loved this idea, and I love their honesty and simplicity. The lyrics led me to create one of the most personal of my songs, and playing this song now brings back a whole wealth of emotions from this summer.
In this case, after reading through the lyrics, away from a keyboard, I knew two things:
1) That the verse would start on a dominant chord.
2) That the song would be in Gb major.
I don’t know how or why, but these two things came to me, and stuck with the song through its development. Normally I find songwriting to be a very quick process, but in this case it took months to try to get it ‘just right’. I’m not saying I managed this, but I tried my best.
(Not convinced my recording is the best I could do, or as good as the song really deserves, but for the moment it works.)
For Lucy: I hope this is the song of our summer.

Incidentally… just home from a gig this evening where my set included Carly Rae Jepsen, Billy Joel, Elton John, Red Hot Chili Peppers, LMFAO, Hans Zimmer and others. Nothing like being eclectic…
